Communication in the form of high frequency signals, such as those in the range of about 500 kHz to 2 GHz, over radio or over cable is utilized in a variety of applications, such as cellular telephony and cable television.
Cellular telephones operating in the U.S. band, such as the 800 MHz band, utilize circuit technologies which are well developed and well understood. To the extent that a cellular telephone is intended to operate over a segment of the spectrum in which another communication service is not expected, or expected to be of primary importance, the interference effect of that system on the cellular telephone is typically well understood and tolerable. However, for other segments of the spectrum where other communication services are of importance, a cellular telephone may be subject to interference which is excessive and is not acceptable.
For example, most U.S. cable television systems operate in the range of about 50 MHz to about 1 GHz. These systems share a significant portion of the spectrum in which cellular telephones operate and, accordingly, the interference effect of cable television signals on cellular telephones is relatively large.
In order to eliminate interference by cable television systems, a number of approaches have been used. For example, cellular telephones may be used primarily in those areas in which cable television is not considered to be an interference factor. However, this approach generally leads to the use of cellular telephones with non-standardized operating protocols or which are considered to be undesirable by the public.
Another approach is to use a spectrum guard. In this type of approach, the cellular telephone is designed to operate in a specified frequency range of a telecommunication system. The telecommunication system includes, by way of example, a group of different transmitters, each operating with their own channel. In order for a given cellular telephone to operate correctly, it is necessary for the cellular telephone to be compatible with a particular channel assignment or band plan. A problem is that by selecting the correct channel and band plan for the cellular telephone, other, more desirable modes of communication are excluded from the cellular telephone.Q:
