So diplomatic missions are like regular diplomacy, except that you can not attack or bribe, and there are no gold to pay. Diplomats help you in a slightly more cumbersome way: there is a chance that the faction you are attempting to court will accept your proposal, and it is possible to bribe them. The outcome is random, but the Diplomat's Fame will be a factor. If the diplomacy succeeds, you will get the diplomat's fame at once.
If the diplomacy fails, you can not simply ask for a new consort. The one you have currently is taken away from you, and you will have to perform a lot of tasks in exchange. The tasks you have to perform to get a new consort are quite different between factions:
