The DAWN report describes the situation of patients in the United Kingdom in which both branded and generic medicines are obtained, and has a significant impact on the potential benefits for patients of generic use. The purpose of the DAWN Study was therefore to record local experience with transition from branded to generic medicines, and to identify the factors affecting the choice of medicine at the point of prescribing.

Furthermore, a generic drug master file (DMF) associated with an active ingredient or metabolite of a drug can be used to make a generic food product. Manufacturers are also encouraged to apply for a generic drug product. The following types of applications for new generic drugs are eligible for the PMS:
This survey was performed to better understand structure- and mechanism-based drug resistance or drug-mediated assays, particularly in regard to cell-free chemistry. One of the most significant topics addressed is the off-target effect and cross-reactivity of small molecule drugs, which can possibly alter our view on Cytochrome P450 drug metabolism in safety assessments. Similarly, if drug-induced toxicity can be related to off-target events, the positive or negative nature of such an observation could be considered in regulatory safety assessments.
The data set itself was based on a detailed pharmaceutical data set recorded at the start of the study and at the end of the study. It is not possible to identify any specific drugs that were removed from the set of data. Any organization with a signed statement from a principal declaring they have safeguarded the confidential data is permitted to use the data, and Nofima is such an organization.
