The full-color preview will allow you to see if the image is as it should be, and if not, you can click on one of the four tabs to switch to the other view, and then make the needed changes. The four tabs are Auto Profile, Load Profile, Auto Match, and Auto Fine Tune. The Auto Profile tab, already described above, will guide you through the settings needed to create a noise profile for your specific camera. The Load Profile tab will allow you to select a profile that has already been made for your camera. The Auto Match and Auto Fine Tune tabs allow you to load a noise profile from Neat Image, or from another plugin, and then make adjustments to it to help compensate for any problems that you may have with your camera. This is a great way to make adjustments if you have a camera that is not correctly exposed, has significant contrast or color problems, or is creating a funny noise pattern.
To start, I selected my Nikon D3100, which is not a high-end camera, so Neat Image generated a profile based on a sample area. The camera has a very good JPEG image quality of about 9 (out of 10).
The Auto Fine Tune tab only had a small area of the image selected for me to make adjustments. I selected 100x100 and clicked Preview. The preview area became a small window, showing all the areas of the image with the noise. I selected the area of the image where the highest noise level was visible (in the center of the screen, on the left). In the center of the screen, a black box appeared with the title, 100x100. I moved the mouse over the box and clicked the mouse button, which brought up a menu with options for clicking and dragging the box. To the right, there were options for moving the box. I clicked Preview again and the box moved, showing me exactly where it was in the image. At this point I could see that I was looking at the center of the image, which had the highest level of noise. To the left of the box was a white area that represented the noise-free area of the image. I clicked Done, and the area became visible in the preview window. I selected these areas and clicked Done, which saved the image and loaded the profile. The same thing happened for the other areas of the image.
Neat Image Pro+ is very expensive. It allows you to fine-tune the noise-removal process and it can do a lot of things that Neat Image cannot. But you will need to have the original images, and a large one for the noise-profiling, which can be a real pain in the ass. Neat Image Pro+ is a Photoshop plugin.
Noise Ninja is another Photoshop plugin that is aimed at removing noise. It has a lot of options and can be fairly user-friendly, but it is not cheap. You can find a free version at www.niksoftware.com/noiseninja .
