Damon's plan worked, but without the cure, Katherine was eventually turned back into a vampire again by Stefan. Katherine was left stranded in Mystic Falls and slowly developed a new vampire craving, killing humans to feed her new bloodlust. Damon attempted to use the cure on Katherine, but the procedure was unsuccessful. The cure was used in The Vampire Diaries season 6 by Stefan to restore Matt's memories and turn him back into a vampire, with Bonnie eventually sharing her blood with Matt before he changed back. Eventually, Matt's cure enabled him to turn his girlfriend and herself into vampires, and the couple met the love of their lives, Caroline Forbes. The cure was then used on Stefan, turning him into a vampire and giving him back his memories. The Vampire Diaries season 7 saw three more people use the cure: Caroline, Bonnie and Damon. All three used it in an attempt to cure themselves or their loved ones of vampirism. Damon took the cure himself to take Caroline back from the moonlight, and he successfully turned her back into a human. Damon then used it to cure Bonnie and her mother. He was successful in turning Bonnie back, but his mother died before he could cure her.
The Cure was originally discovered by Damon and Elena, who took it to obtain immortality, a condition that Katherine had never sought. In The Vampire Diaries season 5, Katherine was the first to use the Cure, and though she didn't acquire immortality, the experience changed her. Katherine eventually developed a new thirst for life and a new appreciation of her humanity, craving a mortal life more than she did eternal damnation. The cure was also used in The Vampire Diaries season 5 by Matt Donovan, an aspiring writer who went through a similar trial of living a mortal life with no memory of his vampiric existence. As with Katherine, the Cure was used on Matt without his consent, and he was forced to watch friends he loved die in front of him. He was able to save himself and was able to live a mortal life again with some difficulty. The Cure was later used by Damon as a backup plan to turn Damon back into a vampire if Katherine died (in season 6).
The series finale of The Vampire Diaries reveals that the cure for the vampirism is the very same magical potion Katherine used to turn the entire town of Mystic Falls into vampires. As a result, all the vampires in Mystic Falls consume the cure, returning them to their mortal state. The only exception is Stefan, who is a vampire-turned-human and still has a cure in his system. As a result, he begins to age fast. As he ages, he consumes the cure, rather than the only cure remaining, his humanity. Ultimately, he kills himself in order to prevent his true nature from being revealed to Katherine, who is revealed to have been implanted with a tracking device. The next day, Stefan is still buried, but the town is now filled with humans again. 827ec27edc
